Gartner on SharePoint

by John 19. July 2009 22:19

Some time ago I tried to find the Gartner Magic Quadrants for each of the 6 functional area’s of SharePoint to see how SharePoint measures up against it’s competitors.

Finding the right quadrants took some time since I could only use information which was shared for free on the internet. Since not all used quadrants were provided by Gartner directly thay may even be incorrect.
(When you need access to the real quadrants, please contact Gartner.)

Magic Quadrants offer a visual representation of a market's direction, maturity and participants. A vendor is plotted on a chart with two axes ‘Completeness of Vision’ and ‘Ability to execute’. Not just the technology is evaluated.
More on Gartner’s Magic quadrants can be found by clicking this link or the image below .

Magic Quadrants

I think I have mapped all the functional Area’s to the right quadrants. Note that the quadrants map the complete Microsoft stack and not exclusively SharePoint. However, the comparison seems valid since a SharePoint solution builds on or integrates almost all products of this software stack.

As a result it turned out SharePoint measures up pretty well against it’s competitors. In all the quadrants SharePoint is in the upper or upper right half! No doubt this will even improve now the first details of SharePoint 2010 become publicly visible.

Curious? I will add the 6 quadrants in separate posts in the next days.

SharePoint design diagrams and other supplemental documentation

by John Sanders 15. March 2009 18:54

I never seem to be able to quickly find link to download SharePoint's Technical diagrams and other supplemental documentation.
So I copied it: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc263199.aspx

(And the links to the visio diagrams too.)
